BLINGuals™: Fun Flashcards that Promote Bilingualism

When raising bilingual children the most important thing to remember is to enjoy the process and make it fun, not only for the children, but for you as an adult. Using games that provide repetition to introduce a new word or play in different languages is enjoyable for everyone.

I am always looking for new materials and ideas to play with my daughter to support her language learning in Spanish and English. I am so glad I found BLINGuals flash cards. Their small size makes it easy to carry anywhere. Most recently, we took a trip to Colombia and had a lot of fun playing with BLINGuals™ flashcards on the plane.

These flashcards are also laminated and resistant to the inevitably rough treatment of little hands. The flashcards are double-sided and offered in 15 languages. It is really cool that you can choose the languages you want for your flash cards. In my case I chose Spanish and English. They are also color coded to differentiate between the two languages.

They have a variety of topics that interest not only parents and educators, but also children. Some of the themes are colors, animals, shapes, transportation, and routines around the house – which can also be used to create a routine chart with your child.

These flashcards have two lovely characters – a boy and a girl – that children can identify with very easily. The illustrations are lovely and very easy to understand!

Fun games to play with BLINGuals™ flashcards

Fly swatter: Place different flashcards on a table or the floor. Describe one of the flashcards. For example: It’s a big animal, its colors are black and white and it says “moo”. After the description, have your child tap or slap the right card using a fly swatter.

What’s missing?: Place 3 to 5 flashcards on a table or on the floor. Look at them with your child and name each of them. Have your child close his/her eyes while you hide one of the cards. Have your child open his/her eyes to guess the name of the card that is missing.

The jumping game: Place a line of flashcards on a table or the floor. Call out some of the vocabulary placed on the line and have your child jump next to the correct card.

The magic box: Place a flashcard in a box and have your child guess the name of the card in the box. You can give your child some cues about the card.

Little translator: Show one side of the card and have your child give you the word in the other language.

Storytellers: Arrange a set of flashcards in a pile. Take the first several flash cards and create a sentence. Have your child take another flashcard to continue with the story. Continue with the same procedure until all the flashcards in the pile are gone.

BLINGuals™ flashcards are a great resource to have and take everywhere with you. Don’t forget that learning opportunities for children are anywhere at anytime!
